Paul mentions “joy” and “rejoicing” sixteen times in this short letter to the Philippian church. Yet, the apostle Paul wrote this letter not during a comfortable season of life but during his imprisonment in Rome. Moreover, Paul’s purpose of writing this letter was to encourage the Christians in Philippi who were concerned about him. How was all this possible for Paul? This letter contains Paul’s secret to living above his circumstances which is also the key principle for joy for all Christ-followers in today’s world. While this letter is a personal and practical letter, it is also a deeply doctrinal letter on Christ and the gospel. So, let’s open our hearts to this Philippians series as we learn to joyfully live out our Christian life in fruitful service to God and to one another by the transforming power of Christ, the source of Paul’s joy.
